Evolution of Flight Procedures
Building the bridge between existing industry standard and scientific knowledge and its applicability to flight procedure design.
The presentation bridges the gap between current standard flight procedure and the latest academic research.
Although significant scientific strides in human performance, neurobiology, and psychological behavior have been made in the recent past, it appears such knowledge remains mainly untapped by operators. To some extent, this may be due to a seeming lack of practical examples.
The good news is that some operators have taken steps in turning theoretical academical knowledge into effective operational procedures. I will share with the audience some of these experiences related to crew customized briefing layouts, go-around decision making, and redesigned windshear and go around procedures. Each of these practical applications is based on sound scientific research. The presentation will focus on the philosophy of practical procedural design based on academic research to improve compliance by the individual Pilot and, subsequently, Safety Performance Indicators. Very good news comes from Airbus to apply the new briefing concept as introduced during WATS/APATS/EATS in 2015, by the end of the year 2020.
Improvement to Safety Performance Indicators was also the focus of the recently published Flight Safety Foundation articles on Pilot Monitoring, Go Around Decision Making and Execution by putting academic findings into an operational context and laying the foundation for an evolutionary path for safety-based procedure design.
The appropriate consideration of human performance based limitations is of particular interest when addressing advanced UPRT and extended flight envelope training to include.
Lastly, I will mention research in cooperation with the German Aerospace Institute (DLR) on Go-Around procedure, to achieve effective teamwork.
