ABSTRACT
Combating Human Trafficking in Aviation: The Impact on Victims, From Tragedy to Triumph

Human trafficking is the modern day “stain” on humanity. It is no less than modern day slavery. And while a shocking crime occurring globally, it is still perceived as something that happens “somewhere else to someone else”.

Donna Hubbard is a flight attendant for a major commercial airline and a human trafficking survivor. She has facilitated programs for inmates in jails and prisons over the last 11 years and has been active in street intervention for a decade. Her unique multi-dimensional perspective allows her to provide vital information to those first responders and front-line workers who are confronted daily with circumstances that may or may not be human trafficking incidents.

Working with Airline Ambassadors International as a Certified Human Trafficking Awareness Trainer, and serving as a consultant on the Guidelines for Training Cabin Crew on Identification and Response to Trafficking in Persons authored by ICAO, allows Donna to contribute to the information, indicators and protocol as authentic and effective. These new guidelines provide regulators and airlines with the framework and topics that should be included in the training package on the identification and response to trafficking in persons, aimed particularly at cabin crew members. Donna’s expertise as a consultant was highlighted recently at the AVSEC conference in Dubai presented by Emirates Group Security.
